TRAINING & CERTIFICATION
How Training Works
The Orton-Gillingham Academy (OGA) is a certifying and accrediting organization that establishes professional and ethical standards for the Orton-Gillingham Approach.
The Academy does not provide training directly. All coursework and practicum experiences are completed under the guidance of an Academy Fellow, who is certified to deliver the Academy curriculum. This separation between training and certification helps ensure the integrity of the certification process.
Training in the Orton-Gillingham Approach prepares practitioners to provide individualized, language-based instruction that meets the needs of each learner.
The Academy offers four levels of training and certification.
LEVEL 01
Classroom Educator
The Classroom Educator level prepares teachers in general education settings to provide and adjust literacy instruction for entire classes and small groups that need additional support.
LEVEL 02
Associate
For most educators, the Associate level is the starting point for formal training in the Orton-Gillingham Approach, intended for practitioners working with struggling readers of all ages, including individuals with dyslexia, in individual and small-group settings.
Associate-level practitioners work under the mentorship of an Academy Fellow.
LEVEL 03
Clinical Practitioner
For practitioners who have completed Associate-level training, the Clinical level, formerly known as Certified, provides the preparation needed to teach advanced language skills to struggling readers of all ages, including individuals with dyslexia and more complex learning needs.
LEVEL 04
Fellow
The Fellow level prepares practitioners who have achieved both Associate and Clinical certification to design and deliver Orton-Gillingham training courses at all certification levels, and to supervise and mentor trainees.
